Situation Still Tense
Situation Still Tense: The situation remains still tense at Cape St Francis in the Eastern Cape as sporadic veld fires continue to flare up. A number of boats stationed at the boat house for service were destroyed by fire on Wednesday night no one was injured. A helicopter has been taking water from the swimming pools of houses to help bring the fire under control, with the Sarah Baartman District Municipality also announcing that they will send firefighters from other local municipalities to assist. Community members took precautionary measures by cutting down bushes and watering their thatched roofs when fires swept through homes nearby the airfields. Local resident, Kevin Anderson – who lived in a caravan for years before he built his luxury house – refused when officials told him to evacuate and leave the area.
“It was quite upsetting, I tried wetting the lawn and the roof so that it could not catch fire. We were not being unsafe or anything … we really were just doing all that we could and the winds picked up which resulted in this spread towards the house. Fortunately the house didn’t catch a light but we have had three nights of continuous fires,” adds Anderson. Fire departments are still on standby in case the fires start up again.
