Lions Take It To The Sharks
Lions Take It To The Sharks: The Emirates Lions handed out an object lesson to the Cell C Sharks on what constitutes winning rugby as their comprehensive 24-9 triumph over the coastal team enabled them to take charge of their section of the African conference in their eagerly awaited Vodacom Super Rugby derby at Kings Park on Saturday. The win enables the Lions to overtake the Sharks at the top of the Africa 2 Conference log table, with the Sharks about to head off on a three match tour of New Zealand. Sharks have a few injury issues to concern them, with lock Stephan Lewies being ruled out shortly before the game and Marcell Coetzee being stretchered from the field during it.
The Sharks might have hoped that would be a turning point, but they were well behind at 18-6 down at halftime. They did threaten briefly at the start of the second, and Pietersen made it 18-9 just two minutes after the restart with his third penalty, but the Lions were on the board again soon after that with another Jantjies penalty and then he kicked another in the 66nd minute to make sure of a convincing win for the conference leaders. The Sharks have much to think about as they leave for New Zealand on Sunday while the Lions will head back home in a confident mood ahead of next week’s massive derby match against the Stormers at Emirates Airlines Park.
