Lions Take Apart The Stormers
Lions Take Apart The Stormers: It was a hard fought but richly deserved 29-22 win over the DHL Stormers in their eagerly awaited Vodacom Super Rugby derby in Johannesburg on Saturday night. Indeed, for the first 35 minutes, the Cape team was never headed, with young Stormers flyhalf Jean Luc du Plessis keeping his team in the game with some pin-point goal kicking. However, it was the opposition pivot Elton Jantjies who stole the show on the night, with a top-class performance that was built around superb game management and capped by a well-taken drop goal that ensured that the visitors couldn’t do more than play for a draw in the frenetic final minutes that brought an end to an exciting and top quality game. The Lions were always more accurate than their opponents and their interplay between backs and forwards was better, thus ensuring that most of the pressure was on the Stormers.
The Stormers had selected a strong bench and were hoping it would make a difference, and Damian de Allende’s introduction did give his team more thrust. Yet, it was the Lions who enjoyed the biggest bench impact, with De Klerk making a massive impact when he came on. The Stormers never gave up and stuck to their plan, and a quick throw in from wing Kobus van Wyk to Cheslin Kolbe set up their breakback try in the 63rd minute. The Lions’ win means they move well clear of the Sharks at the top of Africa Conference 2, while the Stormers’ lead at the top of Africa Conference 1 has been cut to one point.
