Korsman Conservancy Controlled Ecological Burn

Korsman Conservancy Controlled Ecological Burn: Three sections of the area was burned, including, priority one, sections from Divot to Short streets and opposite Sanctuary Lane, and priority section two opposite Aubrey Ritz Park. “The burn was successful, the fire brigade was professional and the fire was controlled as planned.” The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) recommend that grass be burned for grass management. “The grass needs to be burned so that when the rain comes, the soil is ready to produce more natural grass for veld flowers.” Korsman Conservancy is a non-profit organisation of residents and ‘Citizen Conservationists’ caring for Korsman Bird Sanctuary on The Drive, Westdene, Benoni.

Korsman Conservancy was established to supplement council services in restoring and maintaining this jewel of Ekurhuleni for the benefit of nature and the enjoyment of nature lovers. Korsman Conservancy is a member of the Gauteng Conservancy and Stewardship Association (GCSA), under the umbrella of the National Association of Conservancies and Stewardship of South Africa (NACSSA). Their vision is to create an indigenous park environment for recreational and educational purposes focusing on children, walkers, riders, families, whilst restoring, protecting and enhancing the natural beauty of the Korsman Bird Sanctuary and surrounding area.
