EMPD Impounds 80 Mini Buses: The Metro police’s bumper to bumper operation descended upon Tembisa on Tuesday to swoop on vehicles that are unfit to be operated on a public road. Of the 117 vehicles inspected 100 were issued with discontinue notices and 17 were impounded, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said. He said the operation took place from 6am to 2pm and concentrated on Reverend RTJ Namane Road, where 80 mini-buses and 20 light motor vehicles had their licence discs confiscated. The drivers were instructed to drive to a place of repairs at the maximum speed of 30km/h and to go for a roadworthy re-test. Seventeen other vehicles found to be in a dilapidated state were instantly impounded and taken out of comission. The impounded vehicles were taken to the EMPD pound in Kempton Park.

The road worthiness test checks the following aspects of the vehicle:

  • identification and documentation
  • electrical systems
  • fittings and equipment (including mirrors, safety belts, etc.)
  • braking system
  • wheels (including tyre condition)
  • suspension and undercarriage
  • steering
