East Rand Crime Run Down: SARS Commissioner, Tom Moyane, praised the vigilance of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Detector Dog Unit when a cleverly concealed cocaine stash was discovered inside books at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday. Customs officials found the books to be unusually heavy. Further examination revealed that the pages of the books had been hollowed in which the drugs were concealed. A drug testing kit was administered and reacted positive for cocaine weighing 2kg valued at R575 400 further investigations are under way. In other news an accident victim trying to call for help became the victim of an opportunistic cellphone thief last Monday morning. Smart Security armed response manager, Marius van Wyk, said a VW Polo collided with a newspaper delivery bakkie with six people on the corner of Monument Road and CR Swart Drive at around 5:15am. “Our guys were coming back to the office after responding to an alarm that went off when they came across the accident which had just taken place. They saw one of the injured persons trying to call for help when a robber grabbed his cellphone and ran,” Van Wyk said. “My guys chased after him and caught him. However, he managed to escape but they caught him again and he had been arrested,” said Van Wyk.
In a different story seven men were injured late last night after a fight broke out outside a bar and nightclub at the corner of Pretoria Road and Central Avenue in Kempton Park CBD. ER24 paramedics were returning to their branch when they were flagged down by the EMPD, Russel Meiring, spokesman for ER24, said. “Upon arrival, paramedics found seven men seated on the sidewalk. Paramedics assessed the men and found all seven had sustained minor to moderate injuries,” Meiring said. Local authorities were on scene for further investigations into the matter .
