14 Vehicle Pile Up On The N3: The incident took place yesterday afternoon in which at least one person has been killed the accident caused major traffic delays in the area. The accident happened around 1pm on the N3 north just before the Kliprivier off-ramp. Clement Masinge, fire chief of Lesedi Fire and Rescue, told the Heidelberg/Nigel Heraut the accident was caused by dense smoke from a runaway veld fire. Max Cohen, spokesman for Emer-G-Med, said four articulated trucks and 10 cars were involved in the accident. Two people, a driver of a bakkie and a driver of one of the trucks, were in a critical condition and were entrapped in their vehicles, both requiring rapid Advanced Life Support intervention.

“Unfortunately, during treatment the trapped driver of the bakkie succumbed to his injuries. He was declared dead on the scene. Paramedics worked to stabilise the critically injured entrapped truck driver while Ekhuruleni Fire and Rescue services used the jaws-of-life and other heavy rescue equipment to cut the man free. The extrication process lasted more than an hour,” Cohen said. The Netcare 911 aeromedical helicopter landed on the scene to assist paramedics in stabilising the truck driver. Once freed from the wreckage, the critically injured patient – who sustained massive abdominal, chest, pelvic and lower limb injuries – was airlifted to a level 1 trauma centre.
